My dear compatriot, reader, let me ask you, what is the rate of your self respect? How do you rate your patriotism? If you are keen on India’s foreign policy, proud of India as a citizen, then you should be following the recent incidents. You must know how China humiliated India recently. First, the incursions on border second the salvo on Arunachal Pradesh Third warning on Dalai Lama. Fourth is height of humiliation. They called our Lady Ambassador at 2:00 A.M. and gave warning for the Tibetan Protests in New Delhi. What is our response? We oblige. We kneel down. In 1962 when our ambassador was called at 2:00 A.M. we also called their Ambassador at 3:00 A.M and gave warning. Then for a long time China did not disturb us. But now things have changed. Money speaks now. Business interest is above human right violation. Or is it sheer spinelessness? Fear of a bully? Regional superpower? If you follow the news carefully, you will know that on every occasion China has humiliated us. But each occasion our politicians in Delhi have been compromising, obliging, adjusting - slipper licking! And what not!
I am sure our Ambassador Nirupama Rao, the strong Keralite lady, should have decided to answer appropriately by saying that we can meet during office hours. But alas I now hear that when she checked with South block the answer was - Go Immediately!. Even after prostrating before them they accuse us of encouraging Tibetan Protests. We should in fact unleash large scale support for Tibetan cause. Tibet’s culture is more assimilative in nature with ours than Chinas. Tibetans have been looking for India’s help for years! They have been living peacefully in India for long time now. All right-thinking people should support Tibetan cause. We can not have refugees staying in our country for more than 50 years!. Tibet must be free. And Tibetans should go to their homeland. After all Dalai Lama has been saying that he is not seeking Independence they are seeking just and true Autonomy. China should listen. They should start dialogue with Dalai Lama.
There are people actors, sports persons in India who say that politics and sports should not be mixed. They did not like Baichung Butia’s decision not to hold the Torch. People like Aamir Khan, Saif Ali khan are eager to hold the Torch. ( what do they have to do with sports I don’t know – In India celluloid heroes are asked to hold Olympic Torch – perhaps our sports minister thinks they run faster than PT Usha ) Almost all sports persons in India from P.T.Usha to Leander Paes say politics should not be mixed with sports. So is Kiran Bedi. I am amazed at their statements. Where were they when India did not play in Pakistan for more than decade? Why did we boycott South Africa for a long time?
I think India should boycott Olympics. We are not going to loose anything expect a free vacation trip for some funny guys in Delhi. You should check how many guys went for last Olympics and how many medal we won. You surely will agree with me. There are some big fat guys permanently sitting in Indian Olympic committee. They damn care about how many medals we bring. If we call off, we save some money. The money saved can be utilized for coaching the athletes for the Commonwealth games and build better infrastructure for it.
Otherwise nothing happens. See an artist’s impression how the Chinese developed their Olympics emblem:

The issues are different and myriad in this post. Patriotism is one thing, politics is one thing, sports is yet another thing. Again filmstars being wrongly asked to promote or hold the Olympic Torch is yet another completely humiliating experience for all genuine sportspersons. But apart from all this it does not make sense that India boycott Olympics just because the venue is China. Olympics is a global sports event. It does not belong to any one country.
For example in 1936 Olympics at Berlin, Hitler used Olympics to propagate his Aryan/Nazi superiority theory but still didn`t people like Jesse Owens create histroy by going, participating and winning four gold medals. It was a slap in the face for hitler..!
Aamir Khan, again as a person I think he has a greatly rational outlook of the whole issue and I cannot help but agree with him when he says that Olympics is beyond politics, a great occasion for different people from all over the world unite in sporting glory. You can read the post at his blog here http://www.aamirkhan.com/blog.htm
Let Chinese do whatever they want, with tibet or politics, but I feel that saying participating in Olympics is not patriotic is sheer nonsense.
India should and must participate in Olympics and bring back a few medals. It is in such events that small town atheletes get fame and glory. Depriving them of this moment just for political revenge is totally meaningless.!
Sreejith,
I respect your opinion.
In real life politics, sports, patriotism all are mixed. Why do we have an erstwhile youth congress president and a congress MP as IOC president? Why do we wave Indian flag when we win? There is no global sport sans patriotism. How can we forget Moscow olympics? Munich olympics? Why did we allow Shiv sena to destroy the wankhede ground? People always mixed politics with sports. I do not want it.But it is like that. Can I ask Sharad pawar to quit the BCCI post?
"Let China do whatever they want" is always been the mentality of Indians. So they do it.India should respond at times.Have n't you heard the story of Sanyasi & the snake?.
